When exporting music against picture for client review, the goal is to have the overall loudness of dialog + music + SFX generally in the range they will exist after the final dub mix.
Note: The actual loudness delivery requirements are different for each streaming platform and broadcast setting, and get very technical, so these are some broad generalizations to get the Konsonant team in the same ballpark loudness-wise, not a replacement for the final mix.
DIALOGUE TRACK:
- Loudness goal: -27 LUFS (Integrated)
- The Momentary and Short term LUFS may vary from this, which is fine as you are measuring the LUFS on a longer scale
- Compressor:
- Use a simple, transparent compressor
- Adjust the threshold so the compressor is only catching the very loudest dialog peaks
- Use a ratio of about 2:1 or 3:1
- This will help reign in the dynamic range of the dialogue track, making it easier to mix the music against it
- Limiter:
- Add the bx True Peak limiter after the compressor on the track
- No added gain
- Set ceiling to -0.1 dB
- LUFS Meter:
MASTER OUT:
- Loudness goal: -24 LUFS (Integrated) and True Peak Max not to exceed -2dB
- Limiter:
- Add the bx True Peak limiter after the compressor on the track
- Can use the gain adjustment to get the overall LUFS level in the right range
- Set ceiling to -2dB
- LUFS Meter:
- Youlean Loudness Meter (FREE)
- Put this at the end of the plug-in chain on your dialogue track to monitor LUFS
- Monitor these two levels:
- Integrated LUFS: Should be sitting around -24
- True Peak Max: -2dB
